Legit Analysis or “Pump and Dump”

If you don’t know what pump and dump means, here’s the short explanation:

A group of banksters need to unload a large position of a stock for an institution (sometimes it is their own account).

They tell their analysts (often 24 year-old MBA grads with little street experience) to make a great case for the public to buy a certain stock NOW.  Then they go all out hyping the stock to their retail division (brokers) who, in turn, hype the stock to you the individual.

The public buys on the hype, the stock goes up on increased volume and the institutions successfully dump their positions.

Soon thereafter a random story comes out on the company and the stock falls and, once again, retail (you) is stuck holding the bag.

The banksters then cry out:  “I’m shocked I tell you, Shocked!  Who could have foreseen this happening?

Adding insult to injury, when you finally get fed up and sell, the house will buy back your stock at a discount and fill the coffers of their institutional accounts…again.

It’s like the instructions on the back of a shampoo bottle…Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

Pump and Dump

So, the problem starts when you see a Guru lavishing praising a company.

Because how do you tell if it is a legit analysis or “pump and dump?”
