We use the term Distractions de Jour quite often.
Because what appears to be news is often just a cover/distraction to keep you from seeing what’s really happening “behind the curtain.”
Cue Up: The U.S. Department of Justice has secured a new federal indictment against former FBI Director James Comey, marking the second criminal case brought against him by the Trump administration in under a year.
This one has the Trumpers thumping their chests, saying: “This time Comey’s going to jail.”
Unfortunately, at best the case is quite lame in that it’s built around Comey saying he saw a cool shell formation on the beach allegedly implicating that Comey wanted to kill Trump.

And in case you missed it, the first criminal case brought up against Comey was based on charges of making false statements to Congress and obstruction of a congressional proceeding.
But the case was later dismissed due to an improperly appointed prosecutor.
How convenient…and we suspect the outcome of the new charges will somehow fall by the wayside as well.
Because that’s what distractions de Jour do best.
And headlines featuring assassination attempts – like the recent one at the 2026 White House Correspondents’ Dinner – make excellent covers.
But what exactly was this assassination attempt covering?
Distractions de Jour
Ironically (or NOT) the focus on the recent “alleged assassination attempt” on Trump has very effectively obscured this upcoming week’s big story.
What big story could that be?
Trump has justified his refusal to seek congressional approval for his attack on Iran by claiming Iran posed an “imminent threat” to the U.S.
And while Trump’s own intelligence agencies contradicted that claim, it enabled Republicans to argue that Trump had authority to launch the strikes under the 1973 War Powers Act, which allows the president to act to counter an “imminent” threat.
But…and this is a very VERY Big Butt… the War Powers Act says the president must notify Congress of any such action within 48 hours of its start.
Then, by 60 days after that notification, the president has to stop using the military for that action unless the Congress either declares war or authorizes the use of the military for that specific action.
Democrats have fought hard against Trump’s unilateral decision to go to war, but Republicans have refused to press him to get congressional approval, apparently hoping that Trump would find a way out of the Middle East crisis before hitting the 60-day mark.
But so far, he has not, and the 60-day window closes on May 1.
Hmmm!
Trump appears to believe the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports will hurt the country so badly that Iranian leaders will have to agree to his demands.
We wouldn’t bet on that.
But this could be another TACO Trade set up for those on the inside (Cough! Jared Kushner’s $6 Billion private equity fund that he manages for the Saudi’s, Cough! Cough!) as to where the price of oil is headed.
What? You didn’t know about Kushner’s arrangement with the Saudi’s wealth fund?
More on that later.
