This week’s Saturday rant just happens to fall on Christmas eve.
And it’s a perfect time to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas.
At the same time, this rant will illustrate the real relationship between Christmas and Jesus.
Please note that we’re saying “Merry Christmas” and not happy holidays or season’s greetings.
Why?
Because regardless of your religious beliefs, Christmas is – and has always been – the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ.
And it was witness to the fact that the war between God and mankind is over.
Huh?
See for yourself:
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
~Luke 2:13-14
Ironically (or NOT) most people miss the message thinking it says we should all have good will among men.
In theory it sounds great…but that’s not the case.
Because if that was true, we wouldn’t have wars…and we’d all get along singing kumbaya by the campfire.
But when you take the above scriptures in context, they say that God is bestowing HIS peace and good will towards men.
In other words, the war between God and man is over.
Scratching your head?
Stay with me.
Prior to the arrival of Jesus, mankind was under the law of the Old Testament.
And if they violated the law they would be condemned.
Sad to say no one could ever fulfill the law, let alone earn favor with God by keeping the Ten Commandments.
To prove the point, if we’re supposed to follow the Ten Commandments, then how many people do you know can even recite them to you?
Crickets…
But…and this is a very VERY BIG BUTT…
Jesus came to fulfill the law and end the war between God and man.
As a result, He became the atonement/propitiation for the sins of the whole world.
The Greek word that was translated “atonement” is “KATALLAGE,” and it means “exchange, i.e. restoration to (the divine) favor” (Strong’s Concordance).
Christianity is the great exchange.
And because of Christmas/Jesus:
- We exchanged our sin for His righteousness (Romans 5:19 and 2 Corinthians 5:21).
- We exchanged our sickness for His health (1 Peter 2:24).
- We exchanged our sorrow for His joy (Isaiah 61:3).
- And it’s already done.
So, instead of thinking about giving/getting each other gifts, we hope you can see that the greatest gift in history happened over 2,000 years ago.
And because Jesus is the reason for the season, that’s why we celebrate Christmas.
Share this with a friend…regardless of their religious beliefs.
They’ll thank YOU later.
